Kosciusko Leadership Academy met at the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation to learn about Aquatic Ecology in Kosciusko County.

Nathan Bosch, Ph.D., director of Kosciusko Lakes and Streams, shared there are 114 lakes In Kosciusko Count including those with two or more acres. There are 106 lakes of 5 or more acres in our county. Kosciusko County is home to both the largest natural lake in Indiana (Lake Wawasee) and the deepest lake in Indiana (Tippecanoe Lake). A total of 97 of the lakes are named and can be found listed at www.water.grace.edu.

The lakes affect everyone in Kosciusko County and there is a need to protect these resources.

Heather Harwood, executive director for WACF, spoke to the KLA cadets about WACF’s role in protecting the watershed. Acquisitions of land for wetlands and lake front property have been made. The WACF has completed ditch projects and accepted grant applications for funding. Diana Castell, Volunteer Educator for WACF, offers residents education on protecting the watershed.
