Turkey Creek Fire Department responded to a chemical spill at 8510 E. Hatchery Road, Syracuse, at 6:06 p.m. Sunday evening, July 12.
According to fire officials, a property was being demolished by a private company after being condemned. According to Kosciusko County Beacon, the property is owned by Charles and Sharon Stuckman.
The fire department received a call for a chemical spill, which had begun to leak into the channel leading to Lake Wawasee located off Bay Shore Drive. Indiana Department of Environmental Management and local DNR officers also responded to the spill and were able to place buffer booms in the channel to prevent the spill from spreading.
According to officials on site, the chemical substance has remained on the surface of the water.
Ed Rock, Kosciusko County Emergency Management Administrator, stated the chemical spilled was a diesel fuel in an undetermined amount. While the Turkey Creek Fire Department has the responsibility for containment of the spill, the property owners, Charles and Sharon Stuckman, will be fully responsible for the clean up. The Stuckmans, according to Rock, are working with IDEM.
