CROMWELL — Turkey Creek Regional Sewer District met for its regular monthly meeting Monday night, Oct. 19. The board was one member short, as President Rex Heil alerted the board to the resignation of member James Evans.
According to Heil, Evans was too busy to continue attending the regular meetings and the board would need to produce names of potential new members. “Let’s put our heads together and get this thing done,” added Heil.
Although the board heard updates on the three-part sewer project’s construction, there was little to note according to engineer Jeffry Hersha. In two out of three contracted areas, no work has started at all. In the third site, de-watering wells have begun to go in the ground.
The board also heard updates from district attorney, Dick Green. Green noted during the meeting, “By noon tomorrow, our bond will be sold,” explaining final bond closing date is Nov. 2. The board also followed the recommendations of Green, passing resolution 2015-2 which allows the board and trustees to sign and authorize paperwork pertaining to the district’s project.
Superintendent of TCRSD, Timothy Woodward, took up the majority of the meeting with his updates, yielding to questions from the board. In Woodward’s report, the board noted the high price tag on a new Stihl chain saw and other supplies — $1,000 and some change — but Woodward explained both the chain saw and the accessories to use with it are necessity items for maintaining areas around the water plant and new sites.
Woodward passed out quotes to the board on the installation of a new, metal roof for two buildings on the district’s property. “The roof has a 20-year life and they have been on there for 25 years,” said Woodward. The board had previously asked Woodward to present quotes from at least three different companies before the board made the final decision to purchase the new roof.
Woodward presented quotes from five companies — Royalty Roofing, Masco Metal Supply, Master Steel Roofing, Currie Roofing and Ben’s Exterior Plus — in the amounts of $47,792.33; $21,060; $14,995; $14,995 and $14,563 respectively. Woodward and the board made the motion to accept the quote of $14,563 provided by Ben’s Exterior Plus. The work is scheduled to begin the following week.
Woodward received a letter from the new owner of Plaza Harbor Condos on North Turkey Creek Drive, requesting the district take over the lift station in that area. Woodward presented this idea to the board, noting he has been unable to locate a force main in that area and the lift station would need at least $25,000 of upgrades to match what the district is trying to do for its own project. Board member Robert Dumford was also on-site with Woodward, and noted if something were to happen to the system at the condos, the sewage would have no place to go but the parking lot and possibly the lake. Based on the recommendations of the engineer, Hersha, and Woodward’s doubts on the benefits of taking it over, the board decided to reject the idea.
The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 16, at the Cromwell office.
